A motorsport photographers dream, shooting at the green hell, NÜRBURGRING (VLN #10)

Being a car enthusiast and motorsport photographer, what better combo could you ask for than the legendary Nürburgring. The unusually steep hills, multiple s-curves and the scenery make this track a dream to shoot. I love including the track, curves and curbs in my shots, trying to capture some pleasing compositions. Adding a big diversity of cars, including some of the rarest and fastest car out there doesn’t hurt the shooting experience either 🙂

I was invited by the Møller Bil Motorsport team as their guest. A part of this team’s purpose is to give people a close up and personal racing experience at one of, if not the greatest track on earth. Well as close as you can get without racing yourself. Møller bil, and the other sponsors bring guests, and there’s a handful of dedicated guides showing you around the track, pit area and the team camp. Møller bil is a big car dealership located in Norway, but also has dealers in Sweden and in the Baltic states. A big bonus, that’s normally not a part of the guiding, was that we got to drive around the track between the qualification and the race. Not in a race car though, but either way, it’s cool to see the track in real life in a slow pace, including most of the GP track. The track is so much steeper than the impression you get from playing games and watching videos from the ring.

VLN is short for Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nürburgring, and translates into something like “Association of Nürburgring Endurance Cup Organizers”. Møller Bil Motorsport races in the SP3T class. This is a special class with turbocharged engines up to 2.0 liter (over 1620cc up to 2000 cc). Møllers TT has a four-cylinder engine, with an output off approximately 350hp/450 Nm. The car is built by Raeder Motorsport, and they also have the technical responsibility for the car between races. At the races there are 3 permanent staff mechanics from Møller Bil dealers in Norway, consisting of Ted Trønnes, Anders Lindstad and Stian Skårsmoen. At every race there are also 4 guest mechanics from the Møller Bil dealers. John Skjalg Lund is also a part of the pit crew, and Leif Erik Vik is the technical chef.

There were only 4 cars starting in the SP3T class in this race. The TT below, car #303 from the LMS Engineering team, is the one car that gave the Møller team the toughest competition in this race. The 2 other vehicles did not complete the race unfortunately (#335 Seat Leon Cup Racer & #332 Audi TTS)

The LMS Engineering teams TT runs, in opposition to all the other cars in the SP3T class, on a 5-cylinder engine. They stripped a 2,5L straight 5 cyl. engine from an Audi, made a custom crankshaft and got the displacement under 2L (82.5 mm bore x 74.5 mm stroke). The engine was then not within the “close-to-production engine” according to the regulations, and they had to mount a 38mm restrictor, and limit the charge pressure to 1,4 bar. But is running a 5 cylinder engine against 4 cylinders fair? The LMS TT states they have close to 400 hp according to their sales add, and the 4 cylinder vehicles are limited to a lower figure than this. Well, I’m not to judge in this matter, as my knowledge is to limited, but the SP3T class have shrunk drastically in the numbers of cars attending after the LMS team entered with this car…… And that’s a pity!
But either way, the Møller Bil team gave them a real fight, an all in all it didn’t end so bad 😉

Here is the Lexus RC F GT3 from Farnbacher Racing, racing in the SPX prototype class. It’s based on the Lexus RC F sports coupe but is wider, lower and weighs just 1250kg. They’ve tucked a 5 liter V8 engine in there, boosting 540 hp. Looks pretty awesome if you ask me!

The spectators at the Nürburburgring is really som hardcore fans, partying hard at the numerous camps around the track. Here’s some blokes who cut the roof of a Volvo, and stuck a hot tub in there. With a cold beer, and a view of the Brünnchen area, it sounds quite all right in my book.

The 10’th VLN race, the last race for the season, was delayed for 2 hours because of fog. The qualifying was supposing to start at 08.30, but was also held off for several hours because of massive fog at the higher sections of the rack. At the end of the race, the fog again got thicker and thicker, leading to several cars off the track and the race was eventually red flagged. The below picture is from the highest point at the track, Hohe Acht.

The drivers of the Møller Bil Motorsports team is Håkon Schjærin (Race chef), Atle Gulbrandsen and Kenneth Østvold. They are all experienced race rivers from Norway. Håkon Schjærin has been racing the Nürburgring since the mid 90’s, so he’s no rookie at this track. Atle has been attending the VLN since 2005, and have loads of racing experience from Norway and in the States. His voice is also familiar to most of you from Norway, as he is a TV commentator for Viasat. Kenneth Østvold is well known as one of Norway’s best go-cart drivers, and has been a part of the team since 2011.

Møller bil made a very late pit stop when the end of the race was closing in. There was estimated 3 laps left, and they drove out of the pit just when the team LMS TT was passing. They made a bold tire choice, and is was exiting to watch the monitor of the 2 cars flying around the track. The race was, like mentioned earlier, red flagged, but it would have been fun to se how it would end if the race had been driven to its end.

James Glickenhaus, a former movie director from New York, is making some awesome limited edition sports cars. Here is one of the 2 Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG 003 racing in the VLN series. SCG 003 is available as both a racing car (SCG 003C) and a street legal version (SCG 003S) if you have some deep pockets 😉 The racing version has a Honda 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, and the road legal a twin-turbocharged V12.

If you have access, be sure to take a look at the race camp behind the pit area. There’s millions of dollars in awesome trailers, tires and racing stuff. And you are sure to see some extraordinary rare vehicles, like I did with this Gemballa Avalanche. If you had an interest in Porsches in the 80 and 90, you maybe remember some crazy Gemballa Porsche builds back then?

After the race was flagged red, there was a tense atmosphere in the team tent, as to what the final result would be.  But after a long wait, the final result was 1. Place to the Møller Bil Motorsports team. This gave the Møller team a total of two first places and 2 second places in this season. They only attend at 6 of the 10 races every season, so that’s not a bad total, considering they also had one gearbox breakdown.

Gatebil main event 2015

September came early this year!  Well, things got crazy busy, and the blog post from the Gatebil main event just had to wait a bit longer  😦

The main Gatebil event was held July 10-12 , and unfortunately it crashed with other big events around the globe. This resulted in many of the big names like Fredric Aasbø, Mad Mike whiddett and vaughn gittin jr not attending this time. But hey, isn’t it cool to let all the other awesome drifters get their names out there ? With approximately 40.00 visitors this still wasn’t some small event. I spent the whole sunday trying to catch some of the Gatebil spirit. I hope I succeeded in giving you a small bit of this madness 😉

Leif Frykas has built one hell of a ride based on a Ford Anglia. But seriously, there isn’t much Anglia left, besides the cool and very characteristic look of the Anglia. The Carburetors @ John Dee 16.05.2015

Yet again I had the pleasure of shooting The Carburetors the night before the Norwegian national day! This time with the Norwegian Revolver Avenue and the German V8Wankers as support. Revolver Avenue really surprised me, playing some great songs with real confidence for such a “young” band (First EP released in 2011). Unfortunately for the support bands, the lighting was not in their favor for getting great shots. The best light is usually “saved” for the main band. The band members have no, or very little front light, and a bucket load of back lighting. So I decided to enjoy the music (And a cold beer), leaving me only with this one keeper of Nils Alex Rama Engeness from Revolver Avenue.

Usually I’m packed with photo equipment (Almost to the point of needing a Sherpa and pack donkeys). But this time I traveled light, only with a mirrorless camera (Fujifilm XT-1) and the new Fujinon 16-55 2.8 lens. And i must say I’m highly impressed with this combo. I didn’t know what to expect from this camera in these low light and fast-moving situation. But hey, this little camera really performs. Both the high ISO capabilities, and the focusing was really great. The focus off course is not on par with my Nikon D800, but it was more than sufficient. For those with photo interest, I placed the Exif data under all the shots, so you can see the shooting data. Everything was shot in full manual mode.

Next up was the V8Wankers. Their a band originating from Offenbach in Germany, and was formed back in 2000. The 15 years of experience as a band really shows, and like The Carburetors, they’re also a bunch of real crowd pleaser’s. I highly recommend to see them live if you get the opportunity. Remember to check out their new album “Harden the Fuck up’!!

Golf GTE

Electric vehicles are really popular these days. Well, that’s if you’re from a country like me, Norway. The largest share of electric vehicles in Europe is sold in Norway. Leaving only some percentages of the sale to the other countries. A couple of weeks ago the total amount of electric vehicles tipped over 50.000. That’s pretty amazing, considering there is only 5 million people living in this long stretched country. I would like to tell you that Norwegians are extremely environmentally minded, like the green gods off Europe, but i don’t think that would be telling the truth. The reason is most likely these benefits made available by the government. No tax when purchasing new electric vehicles. Reduced road tax. No road toll, Free public parking, Free public charging, And to top it all , you can pass the long queues home from work, driving in the bus-lane 🙂

But enough of all this pure electric vehicles talk. That’s not for everyone. Most people owning an electric vehicle has this as a second vehicle (Or this as the primary vehicle, and a combustion driven vehicle as second vehicle). At least if you sometimes have to drive longer distances, there is those times the reach just wont be sufficient. Then how about combining those to into one vehicle? Well it has been done before, kind off.. like the Prius (shivers going down my spines). That just won’t get me exited at all, sorry. Many others have tried, but in my point off view, not pulled it off completely. It Need’s to be a plug-in hybrid if its suppose to make any sense.

Well how about the new Volkswagen Golf GTE? It’s a plug-in hybrid with a mix of a sporty hatchback. Not some boring Prius :). Combining a 150PS 1,4TSI, and a 102PS electric engine makes a versatile combination. Driving completely electric there is still plenty of power (320Nm), and its so nice an quiet driving electric. But if you enter the GTE mode, you combine the engines, giving you a system output  204PS and 350Nm. The torque is what impresses the most, even though the battery weighs 160 kg, and the vehicle total is 1,520kg. The torque curve is so consistently high, and really pushes you back in the seat when the electric boost kicks inn. It’s so much fun!

_DSF6395-Edit smallThe GTE has a top speed of 222 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds. In comparison, the GTI with 220PS goes from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.  In pure electric mode, it runs all the way up to 130 km/h. Picture below is of the GTE with the color carbon steel grey. This color is only available to the 3 GT models.

The interior  also shows that this car is definitely in the GT family together with the GTI and GTD. The interior is just the same, but instead of the red stripes/details (GTI) or grey (GTD), it’s blue. Like shown here in the seat covers. Just in the same checkered seats like the golf GTI/GTD.

_DSF6486-Edit smallThe instrument might be unfamiliar to those newer driven an electric VW before, with its “Power-meter”. I really like that they put inn a tachometer, giving me a quick access to see if the engine is running. In the Audi A3 e-tron, with the same driveline, i missed this (You have to enter a menu to show the rpm)

Plug-in hybrid. This is what separates a hybrid from a plug-in hybrid. The possibility to charge the battery when parked. A normal hybrid charges the battery when braking (regenerative braking), or possibly by the engine in some cases (Obviously consuming more fuel, and not that environmentally friendly). The GTE packs a 8,8 Kw/h lithium-ion battery pack, giving you a maximum range up to 50 km pure electric driving. The available range off course depends on many factors such as for instance driving style, topology, outside temperature, but not the least which other electricity consumers you turn on. Heating or cooling definitely pulls a lot of power, and can lower the available range significantly. You better learn where the off button on the climatronic is, if you want to drive for longer distances electrically.

_DSF6385-Edit smallThe power is transferred to the wheels via the DQ400E 6-speed DSG gearbox. There is 3 wet clutches. One connecting the TSI engine to the electric motor, and he 2 others are one for each input shaft in the gearbox. There is no conventional starter motor for the combustion engine, as the electric drive motor can start the TSI engine. Considering how many operations going on changing gears, and switching on/off the engine etc, the gearbox and hybrid drive changes is very smooth. Thumps up to the engineers behind this configuration.

Many small details making the GTE stand out from the regular golf’s. The GTE emblem, and also the seams with blue thread on the steering wheel, gear shifter etc.

The steering stiffens significantly, giving you more feedback from the front suspension when driving in a sporty manner. There is also a sound generator making the engine sound more aggressive. If you order your car with DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control), also the shock absorbers goes to “sport mode”._DSF6410-Edit small cooler

There is 5 different drive modes you can use. With the GTE button you enter the GTE mode described earlier. When using the “e-mode” button you can switch between electric mode and Battery hold. In electric mode there is pure electric driving, unless you use the kick-down. This will result in the combustion engine starting, and you have the full 204 horsepower’s available.  In battery hold  mode, it tries to use as little electricity as possible, saving the power for later (For instance when needing the battery capacity later when entering an low emission zone in the city). From the hybrid menu in the multimedia device, you can enter 2 more modes. Hybrid auto, and charge battery. In the hybrid auto mode, it uses the electric engine at low speeds and small loads. But uses the combustion engine at higher speeds/loads. In Charge battery mode it uses the combustion engine to charge the battery, which in turn leads to higher fuel consumption. This off course is not the best way, but nice to have the function available if you need to top up the battery when your out of extra boost power 🙂

_DSF6388-Edit smallThe front incorporates the same C-style shaped LED lights as the e-Golf and e-up! The car is also equipped with full LED headlights and rear lights. The ACC (Adaptive cruise control) system radar shown under the license plate is also a dream come true. Keeping your set speed, but automatically adapting to vehicles in front off you. Just sit back and relax 😉

Driving this great plug-in hybrid gave me a really fresh new feeling to this segment of vehicles. I can highly recommend it, and I’m exited to see how this type off vehicles will evolve in the future.

The Carburetors @ John Dee 19.12.2014

Ain’t no better way to get in the proper Christmas mood than some Fast forward Rock’n roll.
December 19, The Carburetors performed their annual ”Christmas show” at John Dee.

Starting off with the curtains pulled together with Jussi Bjørling singing “o helga natt” (O Holy Night), sets the mood before they start their well known intro with V8’s roaring, making your eardrums allmost burst!

Packed with a 24-70 and a 200mm prime lens, I was there to shoot the show. But this time it was quite a challenge. There were a lot of people ready for getting in the Christmas mood, and the place was packed almost full. Of course great for the guys on stage, but a pain in the ass for me. John Dee being a fairly small venue, there aren’t any dedicated photo pits. Getting any clear view without arms and heads in the frame is challenging. In some shots it ads to the mood, but not in every shot.

But despite the crowd, I feel I got a fair amount of decent shots. Especially when the lighting tech people were on my side, spreading some awesome light! (Thanks!)

Kai Kidd had some great lights on him in several occasions, making him one of my favorite objects this evening. Of course his expressions and presence on stage makes him very photogenic. He always goes that extra mile pleasing the audience.

Eddie Guz is of course also a real crowd pleaser. His voice is a big part of The Carburetors distinctive sound.
